Hard Times

Woke up this morning, turned on the news
There’s a man shuffling papers singing the blues
Turning away struggling with what to say
He’s caught on the lines
Trying to hide his eyes from the truth

In walks my Mother to see why I’m crying
I say “I need some comfort to stave off my mind.
Give me distraction, the latest attraction…
Any old thing will do.
I need to shake off these weary times and change my view”

“Well, put sugar in your coffee” Momma told me
“Cause things can always get better than they seem.
It takes a spoonful in your cup and a steady hand to stir it up
To find out how good and sweet life could be”

So I pack up my suitcase and head for the door
She says “Looks like you’re going but do you know what for?”
Tell her that “My boots got fresh laces their gonna take me new places
To wear down the tread
And try to find a way I can clear my head”

“Because when hard times are everywhere you go,
Or make up the only world you know,
Can’t waste your time on self denying,
Get on that path that you've been eyeing.
Set your sights, take yourself down the road”

“Well, put sugar in your coffee” Momma told me
“Cause things can always get better than they seem.
It takes a spoonful in your cup and a steady hand to stir it up
To find out how good and sweet life could be”
